Organizing and De-Cluttering Services

What is Clutter?

An organized home, a clutter free world, does this sound beyond your grasp?

How serious is the problem in your world?

To find out, take this quiz:

Can you find what you need when you need it?

Do you have enough money to pay your bills but forget to pay them?

If you touch or grab one thing does a pile of other things fall?

Can you invite people into your home at a moments notice?

If you open a closet quickly, will it create an avalanche?

Do you shop for things you already have but can’t find?

Do you pile up your purchases when you get home without putting them away?

Do you have to step over things to get where you need to go?

Do things get ruined or damaged because they are laying around?

Are pets able to reach their beds, dishes, litter boxes?

Is there room in your bed for you to sleep without rearranging?

Have you hurt yourself by stepping on something on the floor?

Do you panic when the doorbell rings?

Is there a funny smell when you re-enter the house?

Is there trash or garbage on the floor? On the furniture?

Have pets soiled the house and it has not been cleaned up?

Has anyone suggested you have squalor or disposophobia?

If you answer yes to any of the above questions you could benefit from our services.

Depending on the severity of the clutter, you will answer yes to some or all of the questions.

The basic levels of disorganization. From clutter to squalor.

Level One

If your environment is at a Level One clutter then you are just disorganized with a few rooms or corners of rooms that have things piled up for lack of where to put things. To remedy this situation we need to find permanent homes for these things that are without homes. This may require getting some shelves or some containers or re-organizing a closet or a storage area to accommodate the stuff. We can separate the things into like groups and arrange them to be stored, or be accessible seasonally, or as needed, or regularly. We typically see Level One problems in corners of basements, garages, attics, closets, and spare bedrooms. Or it can be more local to the coffee table, the pile on the dining room table, the pile on the counter by the refrigerator, piles of paperwork on the desk, or accumulated things on a dresser top.

Level Two

A Level Two clutter situation is a Level One that is more intense. The clutter may take up the entire storage room rather than a corner of the room. Or in the main part of the house it may be in the corner of the room in the form of stacks of magazines, newspapers, books, out-grown toys, abandoned hobby materials, etc... The same plan of action will work as for the Level One though. Although it may take a little longer and require more careful planning as to what to do with the things once they are sorted through. At this point a good idea is to try to throw out or donate as much as possible to thin the herds to a more manageable level.

Level Three

Level Three involves turning another corner in the scheme of things. This is the beginning of true squalor. Level Three will include dry trash piled up or thrown about in the house. Not garbage, mind you, just dry trash. We define dry trash as paper, cardboard, plastic bags, anything that should have been thrown away and discarded, but does not contain any source of moisture. Trash will not create odors in the house since there is no moisture exposure. To handle a Level Three situation, the trash must first be gathered and tossed out, then we can treat the remaining clutter as a Level Two situation.

Level Four

A Level Four situation is usually a health hazard. Level Four will include garbage in with the trash. Garbage is defined as trash that contains moisture of any source. Garbage is usually discard from kitchen and bathrooms generally. That would include food products, containers from food, any used paper products such as kleenex, toilet paper, paper towels, feminine products, or any damp paper or cardboard. Garbage will create odors in the house and mold or mildew may be growing. Underlying rugs, floors, and furniture will be ruined if the garbage has sat there for any length of time. A Level Four situation requires the entire contents of the cluttered areas to be discarded. We will often find mold, mildew, and infestations of roaches and maggots in these areas. This is a serious situation and must be dealt with immediately. It will require gloves, face masks, and an exterminator service to be brought in. You may be advised to discard most or all of the house furnishings including upholstered surfaces, drapes and curtains, and carpets.

Level Five

A Level Five situation is one which contains animal or human waste. From pets that refuse to be housebroken, to the infirm or elderly that cannot contain maintain their bodily functions, to the remains from death. Level Five is reached once these waste products have been left and not been cleaned up after. Level Five refers only to the presence of the waste only, with no additional clutter.

Level Six

Level Six is a combination of Level Five compounded by Level Four or Three. That would include animal or human waste along with garbage and/or trash cluttering the home.

www.squalorsurvivors.com

This is a support program for those who live in or have lived in true squalor. They have their own rating system but this would amount to our Level Three or higher. There are pictures and heartfelt stories from the survivors themselves. Also some famous - both real and fictional people, who have been through this. This is required reading for anyone dealing with Level Three or higher.

www.disposophobia.com

This is a service located in New York that specializes in heavy duty clear outs and follow up service. They are very expensive though. They require a photo pictorial and charge $150 just to give you an estimate based on those pictures. They do however have some amazing pictures posted on their website. Defiantly Level Three and beyond here. Very blunt and to the point.
